Bulimia nervosa was first described by Gerald F.M. Russell in the year 1979. He elaborated key features of this mental illness leading to eating disorder based on a research carried out on patients from 1972 to 1978. He described this illness as an ominous variant of anorexia nervosa. In the patients he had observed had common features like episodes of overeating followed by self induced vomiting or excessive exercising to get rid of calories taken in. This eating disorder is predominantly overshadowed by excessive attention to weight and looks. A person with bulimia eats a lot of food in a short amount of time, called binging and then tries to prevent weight gain by getting rid of the food, called purging. The purging is done by two methods, one, self induced throwing up or second, taking laxatives. The person suffering from bulimia feels that he/ she cannot control the intake of food, hence should carry out getting rid of those calories. The bulimics are very much unhappy with the size and shape of their body; hence they are in constant effort to lose weight.

Bulimia is kind of disorder which affects any class, creed or any person. It is not related to just any particular region or class. Mainly there are psychological or social reasons behind occurrences of these disorders.

There is definite cure to this disorder. An expert team of physicians, psychologists and therapists can observe the patient and find the roots of his/ her disorder. Once the root causes are found, then they can chalk out a plan to eliminate those reasons. If the causes are due to some physical or mental reasons then medicines such as antidepressants are prescribed. The dosage is administered under expert observation. Should there be any social reason causing the distress or disorder, and then the therapists pitch in and guide the patient about changing or reforming the behavioral patterns to overcome this dis-ease. Bulimia treatment can be administered through a recovery program which is carried out at bulimia treatment centers. One of the basic tools used to fight against this disorder is psychotherapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy, which teaches patients to replace negative thoughts and behaviors with healthy ones, is often used. Other mind-body and stress-reduction techniques, such as yoga, tai chi, and meditation, may help patients to become more aware of their body and form a more positive body image.
